 "The Writing Process"


    In our LIT102  class, one of the topics discussed was the writing process. It involves a series of five (5) steps that students can use in order to produce a finished piece of writing.  It is fascinating to learn that these steps are recursive, for example, a student can be at the revising stage and return to the prewriting stage to develop and expand on their ideas.   It is important that I  model and allow students to practice these steps in order to help them become excellent writers.

    As we went through the writing process, I was able to gain clarity on activities that should take place at different stages. For me, prewriting was generating ideas and brainstorming. Today, I have gained new knowledge that at the prewriting stage the process of planning and the generating of ideas begins. I have learned that there are many strategies that can be used at this stage which include brainstorming and clustering. 

     Also discussed was the second stage of the writing process- drafting.  It is important during this stage to focus on content rather than mechanics. However, after this session,  I have realized that I am guilty of paying attention to mechanics during the drafting stage rather than focusing on content. 

    After exploring the writing process thoroughly, I now feel better equipped to assist and guide my students through the process. Furthermore,  I can also use this process to improve my writing as I undergo my studies.

  1. Amina, I am also guilty of not always using the writing process. However, from our discussions in class and my recent use of the writing process, I was able to appreciate the benefits.

    One benefit I derived was reduced stress and anxiety about my writing. Prior to using the strategy, I would write in a rush and after I handed in my written work, I would stress over new ideas which came to mind and endure sleepless nights over not being confident in my work. However, use of the writing process helps me to break down writing tasks into manageable portions by carefully organizing my thoughts. Additionally, knowing where my writing is heading based on the ideas generated greatly reduces stress and anxiety associated with writing.

    Another benefit I enjoyed was an overall better quality of written work at the end of the process. In the past, I thought that written work should be completed in one sitting after which you check for spelling or grammatical errors. However, use of the process has helped me to focus on just one step at a time. By so doing, the end product is of a much better quality with a smoother flow.

    These benefits can also be derived by my students. Because they struggle with writing, writing tasks usually intimidate them. However, the writing process breaks these tasks down into manageable bits making writing less overwhelming which can reduce the fears they have regarding writing. I'm looking forward to engaging them in the writing process.

  2. Good evening ladies, I agree with you both. Using the writing process is so invaluable for all writers. I always knew that the writing process could help my students become better writers, so I began introducing them to it as early as Kindergarten, in a simple way; although, I must admit that I did not always use it myself.

    However, now becoming a student-teacher, with so many pieces of writing to produce, I find myself in the rush to complete, making numerous spelling and grammatical errors. If I do not take the time to correct these errors, it would lead to poor quality work being submitted. Using the writing process while here at college, allows to draft my ideas freely and then return to review and edit my work. It has proven to be extremely beneficial for me.

    1. Shevon, it was interesting to learn that students as young as Kindergarteners can be introduced to the writing process. Done in a simple way as you mentioned will no doubt set a good foundation by getting them familiar with the process from a tender age. As they get older it will be easier for them to build on what was done in Kindergarten.

  3. Hello ladies , thanks for sharing on the many benefits that can be derived by students as they are introduced to the writing process. Shevon, I love that as a teacher you made the wise decision to introduce the writing process to students at the kindergarten level . Although the writing process can be a tedious task for many students, this would help to instil in them the love and appreciation for writing.

    It is important as teachers, that we present to our students age and stage appropriate content . I applaud you shevon because you were sure to mention that in your comments. I do believe as teachers, we have an obligation to assist students in becoming excellent writers.Having gone through the process with our lecturer we are adequately equipped to effectively guide students as they embark on their writing journey.

  4. Well said Amina, I use to always view rewriting as the drafting stage. Therefore, I believe hardly ever sitting and plan or generate my ideas before actually putting pen to paper would have been one of the things that affected my writing.
