In one of our previous sessions on "The Emergent Writers," I was totally captivated by the characteristics that they displayed at this stage . The session on the "Emergent Speller" was no different. Although I was privileged to work with students at this age there were instances that I questioned myself as to why they behaved the way they did. Thankfully throughout our session, I gain a clearer understanding of students at this stage and I am now in a better position to answer the many questions that parents may have about their student's spellings. also, I am now able to educate parents who were ignorant as to the type of behavior to expect from their students at this stage. Additionally, the remarks that were echoed in some instances were harsh on the student and can impact them negatively as they may lose interest in writing.
Further, knowledge is powerful and can change our perceptions, therefore, I would use every opportunity that I get to provide the necessary information to parents and fellow colleagues so that they can effectively assist students at this stage of development as we delve deeper into studying their behaviors at this stage I can vividly recall how students at this stage can string scribbles, letter, and letter-like forms together, but they do not associate the marks they make with any specific phonemes. Students at this stage are usually around 3-5 years old and may concepts that they are learning is directionality, which is the direction of writing on a page, also, some letter-sound matches. Students at this stage are fun to work with but the teacher must be patient with and provide the necessary scaffolding and encouragement to help them progress successfully unto the next stage.
